Imperatle

Guess the historical empire

How to play

Find out which empire is on the map, shown at the height of its expansion. You have 7 attempts.

Type an empire's name, pick it from the list and click Guess (or press Enter twice).

Each wrong guess compares the empire you picked with the one on the map:

  • ✕not this one
  • ▲the map's empire was larger in area, or lasted longer
  • ▼the map's empire was smaller in area, or didn't last as long
  • ≈both are about the same (within 10%)

Each miss also unlocks new clues about the map's empire, right under your guess.

Hover or tap a clue, or the area and duration, to see what it means.

A new empire every day.

About

Imperatle is a daily guessing game. Every day, a different historical empire appears on the map, at the height of its expansion, and you try to figure out which one it is.

A note on empires

The game is only about territorial extent and facts. Showing how far an empire reached isn't celebrating conquest: many of these empires grew through war, colonization and the suffering of other peoples.

Sources and accuracy

Maps are based on files from Wikimedia Commons, under a free license (CC BY-SA). Historical dates, areas and borders are approximations, and sources often disagree.
